Designing churches isn't like designing buildings for businesses or other institutions. Churches have unique requirements, unique challenges. At BARRY WILSON ARCHITECTURE we specialize in the architecture of churches and their related ministries, and we understand those things that make serving churches a special work. Whether you need only a small renovation or an entire new church complex, we are committed to providing you with the best service possible throughout the life of the project. The list below gives a brief summary of several church projects. Look for current projects under New Buildings, projects not involving complete new construction are listed under Small Projects, and work done on churches with historical significance are shown under Historical Buildings.

Parish Hall Madison, Florida A tight budget necessitated a very economical design for this 100-seat parish hall. Smooth masonry block was used for most of the construction but was banded with courses of rough split-faced block to enhance the aesthetic appeal. The building is also built around a courtyard to provide an attractive gathering space for the congregation. |

New Sanctuary and Renovation Madison, Florida This congregation wanted to build their new 200-seat sanctuary themselves as an act of service to their church. They just needed an architect who could work with them and design a building that could be constructed by laymen. Entering the new sanctuary, your eyes are drawn to the front platform and baptistery where skylights bathe the entire area in soft, natural light and emphasize the importance of the pulpit during worship.

New Sanctuary and Renovation Wacissa, Florida Explosive membership growth found this rural church at full capacity. Since the congregation didn't want to relocate, it was important to make the best use of existing buildings and provide capacity increases while merging new and old on one site. The final project encompassed a new 300-seat sanctuary, a renovation of the existing church building and enlargement of the fellowship hall.

Multi-use Facility and Child Care Center Layout Tallahassee, Florida This project included masterplanning and schematic design for an 800-seat multi-use facility as well as layouts for a licensed child care center to supplement the church's income. Detailed drawings were furnished to provide good preliminary cost estimates, and a finished model was built to help with fundraising.

|
Catechetical Center Expansion Perry, Florida This church needed additional Catechetical space, a library and office, and they wanted to match the existing Parish Hall in design and materials. To insure a seamless addition, we conducted a search for a special manufacturer of matching block. To help this small church stay within budget, we even looked for ways to reduce the architectural fee.

New Fellowship Hall Monticello, Florida This new fellowship hall is built next to the recently renovated historic sanctuary, and it was important to make the designs harmonious. A courtyard space ties the two buildings together. The second project for this church, the new structure was built by Campers on a Mission, volunteers who travel around the country helping churches who might not otherwise be able to afford construction. |

Masterplan New Church Complex Perry, Florida This project required masterplanning for a new 8-acre site and three buildings to be completed in three phases: a multi-use facility, a youth center, and finally a 300-seat sanctuary. The final complex surrounds a central courtyard -- a gathering point where members enter for services. Facilitating fellowship, this courtyard presents an attractive, active church to the community, while providing a play area for children. See Calvary Multi-use Facility.

New Church Complex Interview Package Tallahassee, Florida As part of an extensive interview process, the masterplan, schematic layouts, drawings and models for a new 500-seat sanctuary and chapel were developed. The design was in the mission style and influenced by the Mission San Luis in Tallahassee.

Gymnasium and Education Facility Marianna, Florida I was contacted by the district offices of this denomination after a metal building system they had ordered was on-site, but they found out that the Building Department was requiring signed/sealed drawings. The new 20,000 sf gymnasium and education facility had to then be designed around what they had already bought. |

New Fellowship Hall Perry, Florida After the church got a deal on a metal building, they asked us to provide the design and construction documents for the new 7200 sf fellowship hall. Half of the building is enclosed, leaving half open for future expansion. The project also included the design and layout of a commercial kitchen and some renovations to the existing facility. Church Expansion Wakulla, Florida This church was looking to expand the sanctuary, education and fellowship areas but was very unsure of the best next steps. Schematic studies were provided to the pastor and building committee for a whole range of options, from a simple interior remodeling to an entire new building. (Photo of existing facility) |

|
New Church Facility Study Blountstown, Florida The church was relocating to a more rural site with room for expansion of their ministry. Several schematic layouts for a new 30,000 sf facility, including a 500-seat sanctuary, 15 classrooms, an administrative area, and a gymnasium/fellowship area with a commercial kitchen were prepared. To support one area of the church's ministry, the design also incorporated a platform that would allow dramatic productions. |

|
Masterplan Lloyd, Florida This church needed to provide additional capacity in the near term but was also anticipating future church growth. We provided them with programming and master-planning of their site, which will allow them to go from 150 to 600 seats in five phases. The initial site permitting was accomplished and schematic layouts and presentation drawings for each phase were prepared. (Photo of existing facility) |

|
Sanctuary Addition and Renovation Lloyd, Florida This church is located in an historic neighborhood and the design of their 300-seat sanctuary addition and renovation was scaled to complement their location. The sanctuary addition was built to allow expansion and conversion to a fellowship hall in the future as part of a five-phase masterplan. |

Sanctuary Expansion Study Madison, Florida This congregation needed to expand but wasn't sure whether they could work with their current facilities or would need a new building. Schematic layouts for an expansion of the existing sanctuary were prepared to allow the church to review their options. After looking at the capacity of the existing facility and exploring renovation options, it was clear that they would eventually need a new building. (Photo of existing facility) |

New Church Facility Lamont, Florida After their church burned down, this congregation needed an entire new church facility, including a 250-seat sanctuary, a fellowship hall and education space. Special challenges included a very restricted site, much volunteer labor and a congregation urgently needing a permanent home. |
